The Ten Percent Foundation is a non-profit organization that was originally planned as a way to benefit the students of Birmingham, but was expanded to include the entire state of Alabama. My vision was to establish a vehicle that would bring the philanthropic community and high potential at-risk students, to a common ground. That common ground is pushing students to success! It is our goal to do this through academic enrichment programs and a unique scholarship funding programs. The name Ten Percent has multiple connotations, but at the core is the principle of giving back.
To make this foundation a success required experience in student development and passion for the cause. That call was answered in a happenstance meeting with a person I had not seen for a few years. At that very point, I asked a very good friend and mentor from my college days to help me. When she agreed, Cynthia F. Scott was asked to come on board and lead this new organization as President/Executive Director. Ms. Scott’s expertise as an administrator in the university college system and experience with student retention is invaluable. She’s creative, thoughtful and sincere about education. She has created an incentive concept that I feel is the future of funding scholarships.
